Counteroffers: has accepting one ever worked out long term?

There is a lot of blanket advice saying never accept a counteroffer. I am more interested in actual outcomes.

Mine worked for about 18 months because the issue was purely compensation. Then I left for a genuinely better role.

If the reason is your manager or culture, money rarely fixes it. If the reason is market pay, sometimes it actually can.
